The process

How estate planning actually works here

Four steps. Nothing happens until you have seen the whole picture.

The free consultation

A short call to work out what you need and whether this firm is the right fit. No cost, no obligation, and no pressure to book anything further.

The Family Wealth Planning Session™

A working session, not a sales meeting. We go through everything you own, including the accounts people forget about, and everyone who depends on you. By the end you understand exactly what New York law would do if something happened tomorrow.

You choose the level

Three levels of planning, laid out with the trade offs. You pick based on your goals and your budget, and the fee is agreed in writing before any drafting starts.

Signing and funding

The part most firms skip. A trust that is signed but never funded does very little, so we make sure assets are actually retitled and beneficiary designations line up with the plan.

Why it matters

What happens if you do nothing

New York already has a plan for you. It is called intestacy and most people would not have chosen it.

The state decides who inherits

A fixed statutory order takes over. Step children, unmarried partners, and charities you cared about get nothing.

A judge names the guardian

If you have minor children and have not named someone, that decision goes to Surrogate’s Court.

Everything goes through court

Probate takes time and costs money that would otherwise have stayed with your family.

No one can act for you

Without a power of attorney and a health care proxy, incapacity means a guardianship proceeding just to pay your bills.

Why Jason R. Breit

Why families choose this firm

Education first

Jason explains the options and the trade offs so the decision stays yours. No one is handed a package to sign.

Fees in writing

Agreed before any work starts. No surprise bills when you call with a question.

Attorney and advisor

The legal documents and the financial side of the plan get handled in one conversation.

Attorneys for life

Clients come back as life changes rather than starting over somewhere new every few years.

Jason R. Breit, Esq.

Jason built this practice around a view he formed early: a lot of legal work is either set up to escalate a fight or is purely transactional, and neither one serves a family trying to make a decision.

So the process here starts with education. Clients get walked through what they own, who depends on them, and what the law would do by default if nothing were in place. From there they choose. The point is not to produce documents. It is to make sure the documents work when the family needs them.

Alongside the law practice Jason works as a Financial Advisor, which means beneficiary designations, account titling, and the tax side get considered in the same conversation instead of being left to someone else.

Common questions

Estate planning questions

The honest answer is that the trigger is usually an event. A first child, a diagnosis, a parent dying, buying a house, a second marriage. If any of those have happened recently, now. If none have, it is still easier and cheaper to do it while nothing is urgent.
At minimum a will, a power of attorney, and a health care proxy. Many families add a revocable living trust to keep assets out of Surrogate’s Court, and some need an irrevocable trust for asset protection or Medicaid reasons. What you need depends on what you own and how it is titled.
Usually yes. The common failure is not a badly drafted document, it is a plan that was never updated and assets that were never retitled into the trust. Marriages, divorces, deaths, new property, and moving to another state all change the picture.
No. The free consultation is a conversation. If you decide to move forward we will send you a list of what to gather beforehand, and completing that prep work in advance is what waives the session fee.
The office is in Melville, just east of the Nassau line, and we work with families across Long Island in both Nassau and Suffolk.
The first consultation is free. Past that, this firm publishes its fees instead of holding them back until you are in the room. A Family Wealth Planning Session™ is $750 and an Estate Plan Review and Checkup is $950, and both of those fees are waived if you complete the preparation work in advance. Comprehensive plans for a married couple run between $2,000 and $10,000 depending on which of the three levels of planning you choose, and planning for a single person is discounted from there. Higher net worth clients who need advanced tax or international planning should expect more, based on the complexity of the goals.
